April's adoption donation is $300 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio.  She has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, bordetella, heartworm tested negative and started on prevention, as well as flea prevention.  April also had a dental cleaning.

April is a 5 year old, petite 7 pound Bichon Frise who was pulled from a local high-kill shelter. But you can tell that she was loved at some point in her life, because she was a little lost at the shelter and really needed to be out of that environment.  April does appear to be hard of hearing/deaf but that doesn't bother her and she will go to the door to potty outside with the other dogs.  April is a sweet little girl who likes to be with her person and she is starting to come out of her shell a bit and playing.  She does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule and she does best if able to potty in the backyard so a fenced area would be best.  She does fine around other dogs but really doesn't play with them so she would be most comfortable as an only dog.

Update:   April has been in our home for about ten days and it's clear she has been traumatized at some point.  She is very distrustful so patience is a necessity.  It took her several days to begin wagging her tail and we haven't figured out yet what she hears and what she doesn't.  Picking her up takes time.  It terrifies her so touching her from behind is a no-no.   As long as she can see you she's pretty okay.  April likes to go outside with our other dogs but not every time.  She has had access to a crate but chooses not to use it.  I think when she has been in a home long enough with enough love and gentle care, she will be a delight.  She's already so very cute! 

Update:   April is doing very well.  She is still skittish which may be her baseline.  She rarely barks and she loves to run like the wind (!) around the house from time to time.   I think in time she could become a lap dog.  She doesn't let me hold her for very long except when we were at the Mingle with the Mutts this past Sunday.  All the people and other animals made her very nervous so she lt me hold her for quite a long time.  She loves to give kisses...too many sometimes!  :)  She's fun to dress (she wore a watermelon sundress to the Mingle); I had my husband help me get it on her because she's not crazy about having her paws touched so we tried to make it a quick process.  I bathed her Saturday and she does pretty good once she figures out she won't be hurt.  She just needs her forever home so that she can finally relax and enjoy life!

Update:   8/26/13  We've had April for a couple of months now and she is still doing really well.  The potty issues are few and far between these days.  She is a great eater and loves treats.  She's not crazy about getting "dressed".   She seems to be most comfortable in a vest harness.  I have seen no evidence of any allergies.  She looks healthier than when we first got her and our Maltese kind of keeps an eye on her.  :)  She walks real well on a leash; not real interested in toys.  Still waiting for her forever home.  :)

Our Adoption Process

Our volunteers work very diligently to process each application and we try to ensure that we are making the best match possible for each dog.  We do not schedule meetings with dogs until an application has been approved.  It can take up to a few weeks to process an application or as little time as a few days, from the time you submit an application, please be prepared to adopt as we cannot hold dogs.

Special Requirements

Some dogs may have special requirements (for example, medications, a fence) -- if you apply for a dog, please be sure to read over the biography completely to see if there are any special needs and if you're home would be suitable.  If we indicate on the dog's biography that a fence is required, this means your home must have a physical fence.  Other dogs may require a "strong vet reference" which indicates that we are looking for a home that has a documented history of veterinary care with previous pets. 

The first step in our process is to submit an online adoption application at www.ohiofuzzypawz.com/forms.  The application MUST include the personal references and veterinary, grooming, and landlord references (if applicable) and their respective contact information.  If you do not include the references and the contact information, your application will be delayed as it CANNOT be processed.  Once the references have been successfully completed, a home visit is then scheduled when a rescue representative can meet all members of the family or residents of the home.  No application is approved prior to the home visit being done.   At that point, the Directors will discuss any and all applications on a foster dog and make a selection--in many cases, there are multiple applications for each dog, so please be understanding that our only priority is the successful placement of each of our foster dogs.

Out of State Adoptions

We do adopt out of state to outstanding applicants, however, our process requires a home visit, so out of state adoptions can take longer.  We do not ship our dogs, adopters should be prepared to pick up the dog in Central Ohio.
